TRANSITIONS: 01 (12" x 24")  oil, mixed media, photography on board

The combination of photographically based imagery along with the manipulative immediacy of paint enables the subject and object to merge and transform from form to mirage, resulting in a more profound meaningful and somewhat spiritual art form. See more...

PARADE OF THE CALLS:  Drummers in Red  (48" x 42")  oil on canvas

The painting series the "Parade of the Calls" is based on photographs taken in Uruguay, S.A.  I was taken by the sound and spectacle of hundreds of candombe drummers, the sound so rich and dense that the concrete buildings along each side of the street vibrated in harmony.  Men in colorful costumes and large sun hats dipped and swooped flags.  Others carried thick poles at the end of which teetered giant three dimensional stars and moons.  The parade included a variety of actors and dancers including el escobero, the stick men who carry magical sticks that sweep away "bad energy" making room for new possibilities.  In this series of paintings I am reminded of humanity's deep need of ritual to disperse fear and of celebration that embraces community.   View the new series and all other work in the Art Gallery side panel.
